Trail Project Manager Resource Assistant

Position Details

Stewards Individual Placement Program (Stewards) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.

Stewards in partnership with the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests is seeking an intern who will gain experience in trail project management through Recreation Administration. Recreation Administration on the Sitgreaves Zone of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests is responsible for maintaining facilities, trails, camp areas, day use areas, shorelines, etc across the Sitgreaves National Forest.

The Resource Assistant would assist the Sitgreaves Zone in implementing Great American Outdoors Act Funding designated to reduce deferred maintenance on non-motorized trails across the zone. The RA would be responsible for becoming familiar with the trails that are included in the project specs and be able to guide incoming trail crews in project areas. In addition, when not working with trail crews, the RA would perform surveys and minor trail maintenance either independently or with other employees or volunteers.

Position Responsibilities will include:

+ Trail Surveying:

+ Hiking and surveying all trails within the project scope and documenting needs for maintenance

+ Developing a plan for trail work and guiding Conservation Corp crews to complete the identified work

+ Identifying and mark trail routes where no tread exists utilizing GIS and mapping information, then marking these routes ahead of Conservation Crews.

+ Crew Coordination

+ Act as a liaison between the zone staff and AZCC trail crews and volunteers

+ Guide trail crews as the perform work

+ Coordination with Lakeside Volunteer Trail Group, TRACKS to identify trail needs not yet noted by Forest Service

+ Perform Trail Maintenance

+ Independent Trail work and light maintenance

+ Develop a sign plan and installing needed signs

+ Create a written 5 year plan for maintaining district trails on Black Mesa and Lakeside Ranger Districts to be followed by volunteer or paid trail crews

+ Identify training in which you are interested and make arrangements to attend

Minimum Requirements:

+ Experience in trail maintenance and proper trail construction such as a season or more with a conservation corps or youth trail crew.

+ There is no specific level of education required.

+ Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable by Conservation Legacy (over 21 years old or drivers license for at least three years).

Preferred Requirements:

+ Preference given to recent graduates interested in pursuing a career in recreation, trails, or other natural resource field.

Benefits:

+ $1000.00/month cost of living allowance. (pre-tax)

+ $50/monthly commuting allowance. (pre-tax)

+ $2750.00 Professional Development and Travel fund.

+ On-the-job training related to position responsibilities.

*The USFS Resource Assistant Program (RAP) is a rigorous, immersive, paid internship providing developmental and training opportunities for individuals interested in learning more about Forest Service careers. After completing a minimum of 960 hours of satisfactory work and an associate degree, RA’s may acquire a two-year certificate of noncompetitive hiring eligibility. The certificate enables participants to apply to internal merit announcements for qualifying permanent General Schedule FS positions as well as a Direct Hire Authority for FS Career positions.
