Pay Grade: 57

Pay Range: $17.87 - $25.02 per hour

New employees start at the beginning level of the pay range.

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Position Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Street Maintenance Supervisor, the position participates in the full range of right-of-way and street maintenance activities including repair and construction duties involving the maintenance and installation of asphalt and concrete, vegetation management, drainage maintenance and installation, street sweeping, operation and maintenance of heavy equipment and seasonal operation of snow fighting equipment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Perform maintenance on, remove and lay asphalt.

Remove, form and finish concrete.

Perform maintenance and install guardrail, safety rail and handrail.

Perform street sweeping.

Perform vegetation management duties.

Perform basic drainage maintenance and construction including ditch grading/cleaning, culvert cleaning and installation by manual and mechanical means, clean catch basins and other drainage structures.

Perform routine maintenance and repair on vehicles and equipment.

Perform daily safety check of vehicles and equipment.

Perform street maintenance and right-of-way work with crews or individually.

Plowing and cindering of roads.

These tasks require the safe use of power tools and equipment such as: backhoe, loader, portable jackhammer, dump truck, water truck, street sweeper, motor grader, paver, roller weed-eater, and chainsaw. All of this work is done in close proximity to moving traffic and pedestrians.

Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and/or Experience: Must be able to read, follow and comprehend road traffic diagrams, regulations and instructions in English. Prior heavy or motorized equipment operation experience preferred.

Licensing, Certification, and Other Requirements: Must possess a valid Class A Arizona Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with tanker endorsement in good standing, or be able to obtain within six (6) months of hire date; clean driving record imperative. Must have or be able to obtain the following certifications within one year: Bucket Truck and Flagger. Must be available to work nights, weekends, holidays and overtime when needed. May be called in for emergency situations and required to work standby.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of operation and maintenance of assigned vehicles.

Knowledge of the proper placement of barricades and signage for road and lane closures needed for the protection of workers, vehicles and pedestrians.

Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.

Skill in operating backhoe, loader, motor grader, paving equipment, mowers, large brush chipper, and small tools, (jack hammer, target saw, chainsaw, weed eater, and blower).

Skill in following oral and written instructions.

Skill in working in the field at job sites.

Skill in operating and working around moving vehicles and equipment.

Skill in following safety practices and recognizing hazards.

Skill in utilizing customer service techniques when responding to inquiries and complaints.

Ability to direct moving vehicles and pedestrians with authority in a polite and professional manner.

Skill in using a variety of computer and tablet software including maintenance management software, time entry software, and Windows computer applications such as Outlook.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

Effectively and safely operate required equipment and vehicles necessary in performance of required duties.

Must be able to lift, push, pull and carry 75 pounds without assistance.

Must be able to see clearly, with correction if necessary, during both day and evening hours and in potentially adverse weather conditions and sufficient to effectively and safely operate required vehicles; read street/road signs, maps, and handwritten/typewritten material and perform required duties.

Sufficient to clearly, concisely and effectively communicate in person and over the telephone and radio.
