Job Description
The Southwest Health Equity Research Collaborative, within the Center for Health Equity Research, is seeking a passionate and skilled Data Scientist as part of an NIH-funded initiative designed to increase capacity at Northern Arizona University (NAU). Expectations include obtaining and working with large population-level datasets, involving genomics data, and promoting interdisciplinary research teams using these data. Key datasets include (but are not limited to) the All of Us Research Program, ScHARe, and others in a cloud computing model (e.g., STRIDES). You will independently analyze, appropriately store, and manage research data, including statistical analysis (e.g., complex data analysis with probability-based samples) and informatics. You will also use computer and data science concepts, computational research, and development principles to contribute to research objectives (e.g., manuscripts, grant proposals), specifically those within the Center for Health Equity Research. In this position, you will also work with project leadership to develop and lead a data science skills workshop, fostering essential skills and innovative research at NAU.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
Analyzing Large Datasets - 50%
• Leads the obtainment and organization of large data sets
• Independently analyze largescale data sets
• Developing and executing analytic plans
• Maintains organized, open, and accessible records of data and computer coding
Writing - 25%
• Writing the Statistical Analysis and Results sections of manuscripts and grant applications to support faculty and staff members conducting health equity research
• Works collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams on healthequity related research projects
Workshop Development - 20%
• Working with faculty to create a series of workshops specific to Introductory and Intermediate level for data science knowledge
Other - 5%
• Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in relevant discipline.
• 2-4 years of research support experience
• Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
• Master's degree in data science, survey science, or related discipline.
• Extensive experience in statistical research methods and data analysis.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Knowledge
• Strong understanding of statistical concepts and methodologies relevant to health equity research.
• Knowledge of survey science and analytic techniques specific to health research and population data.
• In-depth knowledge of cloud computing (e.g., NIH STRIDES) and data warehousing.
Skills
• Demonstrated experience analyzing large, complex datasets (e.g., All of Us) using advanced statistical software (e.g., SAS, R, Python).
• Experience working at the interface of data science and health research, emphasizing health equity.
• Advanced proficiency in data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, R Shiny, Power BI) to communicate findings effectively.
• High-level proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for reporting and presentations.
Abilities
• Proven ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams focused on health equity research.
• Communicates effectively, including the ability to communicate technical information to both technical and nontechnical audiences.
• Exceptional problem-solving, organizational, and analytical skills for handling large-scale datasets.
• Committed to promoting a diverse, inclusive, and equitable research environment.
Background Information
Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. Salary
Anticipated salary range is $77,871 - $97,116. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.
FLSA Status
This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.

This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position.
