Job Description

Northern Arizona University seeks an experienced, engaged, dynamic Senior Director of Development to pursue philanthropic support from individuals, foundations, and corporations for the College of the Environment, Forestry, and Natural Sciences (CEFNS). CEFNS is a comprehensive college with innovative undergraduate and graduate academic programs while maintaining a leadership role at NAU in impactful research.. A college with the broadest range of research of all the NAU colleges, CEFNS is committed to new ways to drive scientific innovation and collaboration in alignment with NAU's strategic priorities found in https://nau.edu/president/strategic-plan/.

The CEFNS Senior Director of Development is responsible for overall leadership and management of the college's development efforts. Additionally, the Senior Director manages one development coordinator who is assigned to support the development work within CEFNS and several additional assigned colleges. The senior director of development plans and directs comprehensive strategies for the qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major gift prospects (defined at NAU as $50,000) for CEFNS. Additional responsibilities include working with staff in Alumni Engagement, Planned Giving, Annual Giving, and Corporate and Foundation Relations to meet NAU engagement and fundraising goals. The Senior Director of Development will also participate in strategic planning and interact with volunteer and advisory boards. The position will collaborate and partner with colleagues and peers across campus while building strong donor relationships. Significant personal interaction with alumni, friends, prospects, and donors is required. The university is currently in the quiet phase of its comprehensive campaign.

This position reports to the CEFNS dean with a dotted line to the Advancement | Foundation associate vice president of college fundraising.

Fundraising - 65%

• Prioritize, engage and manage a major gifts portfolio of prospects capable of philanthropically supporting CEFNS priorities.
• Annually solicit and close major gifts of $50,000 or more in support of CEFNS and campaign priorities.
• Responsible for the overall leadership, strategy, and management of CEFNS development program efforts including coordination of the cultivation-solicitation-stewardship cycle.
• Work across the college's seven academic units and five centers/institutes to support top fundraising priorities, and coach internal partners on fundraising and engagement strategies.
• Facilitate interaction with prospects for the CEFNS dean, faculty, staff and other natural partners.
• Participate fully in the university's comprehensive fundraising program including its prospect management system.
• Provide steward to scholarship/award donors not in the current major gift portfolio.

Planning and Goal Setting - 15%

• Develop an understanding of the mission and goals of NAU, including knowledge of CEFNS and its various units and major entities within the university.
• Work with CEFNS and NAU leadership, along with CEFNS faculty and staff, to identify prospective donors, establish strategic fundraising plans, and execute cultivation/solicitation strategies.
• Set and meet policies and goals for visits, contacts, and fundraising targets; then be directly accountable for the goals.

Management - 5%

• Oversee and provide supportive leadership to one university development coordinator intermediate position for assigned units/colleges.
• Coach, mentor, and motivate direct reports to meet division goals and targets.
• Provide formal feedback to employee, manage work plans, resolve conflicts, and address performance issues.
• Contribute to staff performance reviews and final staff employment decisions.
• Ensure attention to detail in work productivity while remaining flexible for big picture/systems thinking.
• Manages assigned unit/college development program budget.

Communications and Marketing - 5%

• Collaborate with the CEFNS Dean to set and communicate fundraising priorities and vision for meeting NAU's strategic goals with internal and external stakeholders.
• Work with volunteers, advisory board members, and Foundation Board members to promote CEFNS and NAU.

Stewardship - 5%

• Collaborate with CEFNS Dean and Director of Donor Relations on a comprehensive college-wide stewardship program to acknowledge and thank donors.

Other duties as assigned - 5%

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in relevant field
• Minimum of three years managment experience
• Minimum of five years experience as a front-line fundraiser in a comprehensive development program or equivalent experience in a related field, such as sales
• Established record of closing major gifts of $50,000 or more, or revenue metrics that support organizational priorities.
• Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in relevant STEM field
• Experience in higher education or non-profit setting
• Experience in major gift fundraising principles and practices at a major university
• Experience supervising the work of others
• Capital/comprehensive campaign experience
• Proven ability to engage, motivate, and work with prospects, volunteers, university officials, faculty and staff or similar constituencies
• Working knowledge of a donor database
• Understanding of and appreciation for Northern Arizona University, its cultural and geographic specificity, and its commitment to student success
• Proven ability to work independently; a self-starter with energy, humility, and enthusiasm
• Experience/knowledge of the sciences

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Knowledge

• Direct experience with fundraising, volunteer management
• Proven ability to solicit and close philanthropic gifts at the five and-six-figure level, or equivalent experience in a related field such as sales
• Knowledge of completing donor gift agreements
• Knowledge of common management practices

Salary

Salary range begins at $118,430. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.
