The City of Chandler Law Department is currently seeking qualified individuals interested in joining our team as anAssistant City Attorney/Litigator. This is a full-time, exempt position with benefits. This posting will be open July 1, 2025, closing on July 30, 2025.

The City of Chandler business hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. The position may qualify for up to 1 day a week of remote telework and a 9/80 work schedule, implemented at the discretion of the City Attorney. Attorneys are expected to meet the needs of the City, including handling all court obligations, city council or city management meetings, and other in-office obligations.

The City of Chandler Law team, consisting of 34 employees, and is made up of 3 sections: civil, prosecution, and risk management. Who we are looking for
Our new team member will be an energetic and experienced litigation attorney interested in government liability defense. The primary responsibilities of the selected attorney will be:

•Representing the City and city employees in all aspects of litigation, including handling all phases of discovery, motion practice, and trial;
•Presenting recommendations to the City Attorney and to City Council;
•Meeting with high-ranking appointed City employees;
•Analyzing legal liability and damages at all phases of litigation;
•Creating and implementing a case handling and litigation strategy from inception of litigation through trial; and
•Other related duties as assigned

We are seeking an experienced professional with a background in representing government clients in civil and appellate proceedings in state and federal courts, in areas of civil rights (including 42 U.S.C. § 1983 claims), wrongful death, state law torts (e.g., trip and fall, vehicular accidents, road design), employment, contracts, and general administrative proceedings. This position also requires strong dispositive and complex motion writing skills and will work collaboratively with the Risk Management division to investigate claims by reviewing case information, interviewing witnesses, conducting legal research, preparing litigation holds, gathering facts, applying case law, and recommending relevant courses of action. This position reports to the Deputy City Attorney and generally works independently in performing their duties.

Minimum qualifications
•A Juris Doctorate Degree; and
•8 years of experience in the practice of law with majority of experience in civil litigation as well as experience working with jury and non-jury trials and appeals both Federal and State; and
•A licensed attorney in good standing with the State Bar of Arizona; and
•A valid Driver's License with acceptable driving record; or
•Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Desired qualifications
•Emphasis in civil litigation is preferred, including experience in police liability, personal injury, and representation of government clients.
•Experience in advising government staff in areas such as civil liability, personal injury, premise liability, employment law, property issues, contracts, and public records.
•Experience in mentoring and training less experienced attorneys.

This is a regular full-time, at-will position. A register of qualified candidates will be active for 4 months should another position become available.
